Domain Name Ideas

Above All - Domain

In the beginning, begin in the beginning.

You need a domain name. The better it is, the easier people will find your website. This is the first step in website design and development. Choose wisely. Spend some time. Choose a good name.

How To Choose A Good Domain Name

  • Choose Your Company Name or Your Name, but keep it short. The nickname that clients or you use to refer to yourself or your company could be a good choice. A name that accurately describes your company can work too.
  • Short. Keep it short. Don’t make people type in: thisisthecoolestcompanyever.tv The longer it is, the more chances to type errors, get the wrong website, and annoy potential clients (I know, I know: stevenrobertsmith.com is long, so bookmark it).
  • Don’t use hyphens.
  • Find a name that you can say easily and clearly. My first website is realtaiji.com it follows the rules, except that when I say it, people wonder what I’m saying. I spell it r-e-a-l-t-a-i-j-i dot com, and they continue wondering. Handing out cards works better for me. Avoid this. Pick an easy to say name.

Some concerns about A Good Domain Name

  • Get your own. It’s fairly inexpensive. I violate some of my rules above at this website, but it was the only choice left for myname.com. Thanks for visiting.
  • If you choose a domain name with easy an easy hosting company like Google’s Blogger or Blogspot.com, you may limit your options. Blogger.com is owned by Google.com and I hear that Google owned sites creates internal restrictions; you may not be able to place ads on your site, except GoogleAds. (I don’t run a Blogger.com site, so I cannot be certain.)
  • Most good .com and .net sites have been snatched up!
  • Don’t get fooled by cheap names…

Good news about A Good Domain Name

  • Many Website Hosts provide one free domain name. You need a reliable host—that’s step two.
  • Other great Top Level Domain extensions exist—.us is a great one for domains in the U.S.

I warn against jumping right in because you’ll limit your long-term options. If you use one company to track on control your domain name(s) and another company to provide hosting of your website(s), you will maintain an option to shift one or the other companies at any time. It’s a confusing issue at first. I you want to experiment with web design or web blogging, I recommend Wordpress.com because they include…

  1. I have always tried to get domains that are easy to remember. I use Godaddy as my register and the only problem I’ve had with them is when selling my domains – they don’t like you transferring away from Godaddy.

Steven, my blog which you have visited is a personal one which is not monetized or meant for being monetized.

I would really appreciate your views on the domain name chosen!

    Thanks.

I would add that you might want to run the name of the site by a few people since as you said, what seems easy and natural to you, may be completely unpronounceable to your audience.
